MICCAI 2025!

In 2024, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) conducted its first ever biomedical data challenge aiming specifically to advance clinically meaningful AI solutions for automated assessment of the Critical View of Safety (CVS) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. This global initiative involved the collection of a uniquely large and diverse dataset of 1000 laparoscopic cholecystectomy videos from over 50 countries, meticulously annotated by surgeons. 13 teams participated in the challenge, which was presented at MICCAI 2024 in Marrakesh.

We will be running a 2nd edition of the CVS Challenge this year at MICCAI 2025, where it has been recognized as a Lighthouse Challenge. This year’s challenge adds additional sub-challenges to test scene understanding and computational efficiency. We encourage computer scientists to compete in developing innovative AI algorithms for real-time CVS detection, aiming to revolutionize AI-driven intraoperative assistance and enhance surgical safety.
